Natural Fiber Value-chain

Revitalizing Natural Fibers: Tradition Meets Innovation
For centuries, natural fibers from plants and animals have been integral to textile production globally. However, the rise of cheap synthetic alternatives has led to the decline of natural fibers in recent decades. Through our project in rural Nepal, we seek to revive the value chain and market for these renewable materials by blending tradition with innovation.
Our primary goal is to boost the economic potential of natural fibers for small-scale producers by reviving traditional knowledge and establishing viable commercialization pathways.
Key Highlights:
Preserving Traditional Knowledge
- We have recorded the traditional fiber extraction techniques employed by communities in the lowlands of Nepal. This not only aids in the digitization of valuable cultural heritage but also provides an opportunity for refining and modernizing the extraction process.
- By collaborating closely with ethnic groups like the Ranjitkars, we are learning specialized techniques like natural dyeing. This indigenous wisdom provides a foundation to build upon.
Optimizing for Sustainability
- We are implementing selective upgrades to traditional processing methods to increase efficiency and productivity while maintaining sustainability.
- Farmers are adopting intercropping techniques to cultivate fiber crops alongside food crops, enhancing land use.
Innovative Applications
- Refined natural fibers are being repurposed as fillings for pillows and blankets, showcasing their versatility.
- We have developed natural dyes using traditional expertise to provide an eco-friendly coloring solution.
- The first fiber harvest from cultivation is expected by the summer of 2024.
Reviving Livelihoods and Land
By rejuvenating the natural fiber value chain from farm to finished product, our project aims to catalyze rural development, promote responsible production, and spur economic growth. We are excited to unfold the possibilities of traditional knowledge and techniques to sustainably elevate natural fibers. Join us in weaving a brighter future for people and the planet.
